Monologue of Eva Hart
Mummy said something wasn’t right. She never liked the ship.
She called it too big to be safe. But Daddy laughed. Everyone did.
I remember the cold—so cold it hurt your face.
We were fast asleep when it happened. Mummy shook me awake.
“Get dressed, darling. We’re going up.”
I asked why. She said, “The ship has struck an iceberg.”
I didn’t even know what an iceberg was.
Daddy helped us into the lifeboat. He didn’t get in.
I waved. He smiled.
I never saw him again.
We watched the ship break in two. I covered my ears. There was screaming.
We drifted for hours.
Then the Carpathia came.
Mummy cried and cried.
I didn’t understand everything,
But I knew one thing:
That ship—Titanic—wasn’t unsinkable after all.
