inseqitur clamorque virum stridorque rudentem

the shouting of men and the creaking of ropes followed

eripiunt subito nubes caelumque dicemque Teucrorum ex oculis

Suddenly the clouds snatched away both the day and the sky from the eyes of the Trojans

ponto nox incunat atra

the dark night lay upon the sea

intonuere poli, et crebris micat ignibus aether

the skies thundered, and the upper air flashed with repeated lightning

praesentemque viris intentant omnia mortem

and everything threatens the men with instant death

extemplo aeneae solvuntur frigore membra

the limbs for Aneas were loosened by icy fear

ingemit, et duplicis tendens ad sidera palmas talia vocce refert

he groaned, and holding both his hands toward the stars he said such things with the following voice

O terque quaterque beati,
quis ante ora patrum Troiae sub moenibus altis contigit oppetere!

O three times, four times blessed, are those to whom it was fated to die in front of the faces of their fathers and the high walls of Troy!

O Danaum fortissime gentis
Tydide!

O Diomedes, bravest of the Greek race!

Mene Iliacis occumbere campis
non potuisse, tuaque animam hanc effundere dextra

Why was I not able to die on the Trojan fields and why was I not able to pour out this spirit by means of your right hand?

saevus ubi Aeacidae telo iacet Hector,

Where fierce Hector lies dead by the spear of Achilles

ubi ingens Sarpedon, ubi tot Simois correpta sub undis scuta virum galeasque

where great Sarpedon is dead and where Simois rolls all [these things] under a wave

et fortia corpora volvit?

the shields and helmets and brave bodies of men

Talia iactanti stridens Aquilone procella velum adversa ferit

A violent gust from the howling North wind strikes the sail for Aneas when these hostile things were spoken

fluctusque ad sidera tollit.

and raises the waves to the stars

Franguntur remi; tum prora avertit, et undis dat latus;

the oars shatter, then the prow turns away, and the ship's side offers itself to a wave

insequitur cumulo praeruptus aquae mons

a steep mountain of water follows in a great mass

Hi summo in fluctu pendent

some Trojan sailors hang from the highest wave

his unda dehiscens terram inter fluctus aperit, furit aestus harenis

to others, an open wave opens the land in between the water, a storm rages with sand

Tris Notus abreptas in saxa latentia torquet

the south wind twists three ships having been taken into concealed rocks

saxa vocant Itali mediis quae in fluctibus aras— dorsum immane mari summo

the rocks which the Italians call altars in the middle of the waves- the altars are a large ridge on the top of the sea

tris Eurus ab alto in brevia et Syrtis urget, miserabile visu

the East wind pushes three ships from the deep to the Syrtis and the reefs, miserable having been seen

inliditque vadis atque aggere cingit harenae.

and it strikes them on the bottom of the sea floor and also surrounds them with a mound of sand

Unam, quae Lycios fidumque vehebat Oronten, ipsius ante oculos ingens a vertice pontus in puppim ferit

One of the ships, which was carrying the Lycians and faithful Orontes, the water struck on the prow in the ship before the eyes of Aneas himself

excutitur pronusque magister volvitur in caput

the helmsman is disloged and rolled forward bending headlong

ast illam ter fluctus ibidem torquet agens circum

but a wave twists that ship three times going all around

et rapidus vorat aequore vortex.

and a rapid whirlpool swallowed the ship with the sea

Adparent rari nantes in gurgite vasto, arma virum, tabulaeque, et Troia gaza per undas.

scattered swimmers in vast whirlpools, weapons of men, and wooden planks, and the treasures of Troy appeared through the waves

Iam validam Ilionei navem, iam fortis Achati, et qua vectus Abas, et qua grandaevus Aletes,
vicit hiems

the storm overcame now the ship of sturdy Ilionius, now the ship of brave Achates, the ship in which Alba sails, and the ship in which Aletes aged

laxis laterum compagibus, omnes
accipiunt inimicum imbrem

and when the joints of the ship's side had loosened, they all recieve the hostile floods

rimisque fatiscunt

and they split open with cracks
