Photon
A small packet of light energy.
Electromagnetic wave
A wave that has both electric and magnetic parts, does not require a medium, and travels at the speed of light.
Medium
Any physical substance that acts as a carrier for the transmission of energy.
Visible light
Electromagnetic waves that the human eye can detect.
Electromagnetic spectrum
The classification of electromagnetic waves by energy.
Infrared light
A type of electromagnetic wave that is below visible light on the spectrum and is experienced as heat.
Ultraviolet light
Electromagnetic waves that can cause skin to tan and increase the risk of skin cancer.
X-rays
High-energy electromagnetic waves used in medical imaging and security equipment.
Gamma rays
The most energetic electromagnetic waves, often used in cancer treatment.
Visible spectrum
The continuous sequence of colors that make up white light, traditionally identified as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
Conduction
A method of heat transfer that requires a medium.
Convection
A method of heat transfer involving the movement of fluids that requires a medium.
Radiation
A method of energy transfer that does not require a medium; energy travels at the speed of light.
