Rabies virus
A single-stranded (-) RNA enveloped virus that infects neurons of all mammalian species.
Rhabdoviridae
The family of viruses to which the rabies virus belongs.
Pathogenicity
The ability of a virus to cause disease.
Epidemiology
The study of how diseases are spread and controlled within populations.
Neurovirulence
The capability of a virus to infect and replicate in neuronal tissue.
Retrograde axonal transport
The process by which the rabies virus travels along nerve axons back to the central nervous system.
Prodromal period
The initial phase of rabies infection characterized by nonspecific clinical signs before the onset of more severe symptoms.
Excitative phase
A stage of rabies characterized by severe agitation and aggressiveness, often leading to biting behavior.
Paralytic phase
The later stage of rabies where paralysis begins and can lead to death.
Herd immunity
Resistance to the spread of a disease within a population when a significant portion has become immune, either through vaccination or previous infections.
mRNA vaccines
Vaccines that use messenger RNA to instruct cells to produce a protein that triggers an immune response.
Antibody-dependent enhancement
A phenomenon where antibodies facilitate viral entry into host cells, potentially increasing the severity of an infection.
Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD)
A complex of diseases affecting cattle that leads to respiratory illness, influenced by multiple factors including stress and viral infections.
