specify the levels of organization .
Cell —> Tissue —> organ —> organ system —> Organism.
Definition of cells in Animals.
Cells are specialized and branch to connect to other like cells.
Definition of Tissues in Animals.
Tissues are groups of specialized cells that have the same structure and perform the same function.
Definition of Organs in Animals.
An Organ is a structure composed of different tissues that work together to perform a specific function.
Definition of Organ systems in Animals.
Organs work with other organs to form systems that maintain vital bodily function.
Name the 4 types of tissues.
Epithelial, Nervous, connective and muscle tissue.
Epithelial tissue. What is it’s structure and function?
structure- Sheets of tightly packed cells, covers body surfaces and lines the body’s internal organs.
Function- Prevents damage, heat loss, dehydration and infection. Protects body surfaces and organs
Nervous tissue. What is it’s structure and function?
Structure: Long, thin cells with branches. Conducts electrical impulses between the brain, spinal cord, and nerves in the body.
Function: Communicates messages withing the body to aid in survival. Coordination of body movements.
Connective tissue. What is it’s structure and function?
Structure: Various types of cells and fibers. Cells are held together by a liquid, solid, or gel matrix.
Function: Joins tissues together —> Supports and protects structures. Provides insulation as it fills empty space between tissues.
Muscle tissue. What is it’s structure and function?
structure: bundles of long cells —> muscle fibers. Capable of shortening and contracting.
Function: Movement of the human body, posture, movement of substances inside the body and generation of body heat.
Name the 3 types of muscle tissue.
Skeletal, cardiac, smooth.
what is skeletal muscle tissue
Striated muscle tissue (long, fine fibers).
Mostly attached to the bones and makes bones move.
Voluntary which means that we control it’s function.
What is Cardiac muscle tissue?
Striated muscle tissue.
Lines the walls of the heart.
Involuntary
Define smooth muscle tissue
not striated
found in the walls of tubes such as blood vessels, glandular ducts, and the digestive system.
Involuntary.
Name the types of connective tissues.
Bone, Tendons, Cartilage and blood.
What are bones?
Bone is made up of living cells and hard non-living material.
Tendons and ligaments defination
Ligaments are similar to strong, elastic bands that connect bones to bones. Tendons are tough, non-elastic tissues that connect muscles to bones.
Cartilage definition.
Cartilage is a strong, flexible tissue that supports and cushions tissues surrounding the joints.
Blood definition
Blood is a fluid tissue made up of 4 components:
Red blood cells —> Carry oxygen to body parts.
White Blood Cells —> Fight infection in the body.
Platelets —> clots blood if we get injured.
Plasma —> Carries nutrients to body parts.
