What was the New England Confederation?

• 4 NE colonies organized for mutual protection against constant threat of Native American attack (1643)

• ended by colonial rivalries and new English monarch (1684)

• good example of colonies working together for common purpose

What was Metacom’s War?

• Wampanoag chief Metacom wanted to defend against English encroaching on their land

• Metacom’s War (1675-1676)

  • Wampanoag and NA allies vs. colonists and NA enemied of Wampanoag

  • very bloody → colonists won (helped by New England Confederation)

What was Bacon’s Rebellion?

• govt. failed to protect small farmers on Virginian western frontier from NA attacks

• Nathaniel Bacon led rebellion

  • raids and massacres against NA villages (including some with good relations)

  • Bacon accused of rebelling against royal authority

  • Bacons defeated governor’s forces and burned Jamestown

• Bacon died → rebel army collapsed

What were some of the problems in Virginia (highlighted by Bacons rebellion)?

• class difference between wealthy and poor

• frontier conflict with NAs

• colonial resistance to royal control

What was the Pueblo Revolt

• Spanish aggressively converted NAs to Christianity

• Pueblo Revolt of 1680

  • various Pueblo Indians united against Spanish

  • many died → Spanish driven from area until 1692

• Spanish regained control

  • ruled less harshly → became more stable
