Internet
A telecommunication or worldwide system of computer networks that connects networks to exchange data.
Network
Two or more computers connected via wired or wireless connections.
ARPANET
The U.S. DoD-funded network started by ARPA to share information and withstand disasters; became functional in 1969 and evolved into the Internet.
World Wide Web (WWW)
A worldwide collection of electronic documents; each document is a webpage; a service that operates on the Internet.
Web
A part of the Internet consisting of interconnected documents; often used interchangeably with Internet but technically a service of the Internet.
Web Browser
Software that lets users view, retrieve information, and access websites on the Web; examples include Chrome, Safari, and Edge.
Search Engine
Software within a browser that finds websites, webpages, images, videos, and more using search algorithms; results vary by engine.
IP Address
A unique numerical identifier assigned to each device on a network, written as four numbers separated by dots (e.g., 123.123.123.123).
Domain Name
A text-based name that maps to an IP address and is part of a URL, making addresses easier to remember.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
The web address used to access a resource on the Internet; includes protocol, domain, and path.
HTTP
HyperText Transfer Protocol; the foundational protocol used for transferring web pages on the World Wide Web.
Top-Level Domain (TLD)
The last segment of a domain name indicating category or country (e.g., .com, .org, .edu, .gov, .net).
Subdomain
A domain that is part of a larger domain (e.g., blog.example.com).
Ping
A network command used to test reachability of a host and measure round-trip time.
Netiquette
The correct or acceptable way of using the Internet, including respectful behavior and appropriate posting.
Electronic mail; sending and receiving messages over the Internet.
Chat Room
An online space where people can have real-time text conversations.
Online Discussion
A threaded or ongoing conversation on a topic conducted over the Internet.
