what are the characteristics and landmarks of the tibia?
weight bearing bone of the leg
tibial plateau - articulates with femoral condyles
tibial tuberosity - insertion of patellar tendon
medial malleolus - significant prominence at the ankle
what are the characteristics of the fibula?
long, slender bone
serves as an attachment for muscle (no weight bearing)
head is easily palpable
superficial fibular nerve runs superior and posterior to fibular head
lateral malleolus - bony protuberance at ankle, extends 1-2cm more distally than medial malleolus
what is the interosseous membrane?
holds tibia and fibula together
supports and stabilizes superior ankle joint
also serves as an attachment for some muscles
what are the action and innervation of tibialis anterior?
action: dorsiflexion and inversion
innervation: deep fibular nerve
what are the action and innervation of extensor hallicus longus?
action: extension of great toe, assists dorsiflexion
innervation: deep fibular nerve
what are the action and innervation of extensor digitorum longus?
action: toe extension
innervation: deep fibular nerve
what are the action and innervation of fibularis tertius?
action: dorsiflexion and eversion
innervation: deep fibular nerve
what are the nerve and artery of the anterior compartment?
deep fibular nerve
anterior tibial artery
what are the contents of the lateral compartment?
fibularis longus
fibularis brevis
superficial fibular nerve
deep fibular artery
what are the action and innervation of fibularis (peroneus) longus?
action: eversion, assists plantarflexion
innervation: superficial fibular nerve
what are the action and innervation of fibularis (peroneus) brevis?
action: eversion, assists plantar flexion
innervation: superficial fibular nerve
