Demo PPE
Don: Gown (tie neck, then waist), Mask, Goggles, Gloves (cuff inside gloves)
Doff: Remove gloves (correctly, two fingers under cuff 2nd hand), Goggles, Gown (waist then neck, roll away from you, do not allow gown to touch your uniform), Mask (remove without touching front)
Handwashing Skill
Prepare paper towels. Don’t let clothes touch counter.
Turn on one side of faucet, it will be easier
Wet hands and don’t flick
Apply generous amount of soap
Use 20 seconds of friction on all surfaces
Rinse hands by letting water fall from wrists
Dry fingers, then move up to back of hand (use opposite hand to dry)
Use paper towel to turn off faucet
Demo Temperature
Supplies - gloves, thermometer, wipe to clean thermometer

Apply gloves
Insert probe cover onto probe
Ask patient to open mouth and raise tongue
Place probe at base of tongue and to one side
Ask patient to lower tongue and close mouth without biting probe
Hold the probe in place until you hear beep
Read thermometer
Remove probe and clean thermometer
Return probe to thermometer

Respiration Demo

Tell patient you’ll be taking their pulse. Put hand on back if you need to.
Ask about their comfort
Check that they’re in good positioning
Count respiration for one full minute. Record within 2 breaths of observer.
Check for comfort, safety

ask if they’re comfortable, check they’re away from rails
Radial Pulse
WIPES
Support resident’s arm to avoid dangling
Check they’re in good position with legs uncrossed, been seated for 5 minutes
Use finger and not thumb to take pulse
Locate correct site.
Count pulse for one full minute and record within 4 beats of observer.
Ask resident about comfort, preferences
Blood Pressure Demo
Supplies: Multiple wipes, BP Cuff, Stethoscope (practice with yours too in case!)
WIPES
Wipe stethoscope ear pieces and diaphragm
Warm diaphragm in hands
Position arm level with heart palm up
Position self so that gauge is at eye level
Expose arm and expel remaining air
Place BP cuff on arm. Locate brachial artery.
Inflate cuff until you no longer feel the pulse. Note this number
Place stethoscope in ears and diaphragm over brachial artery. Do not place under cuff.
Inflate the cuff 30mmHg beyond the point where you no longer feel the pulse.
Slowly and steadily deflate at a rate of 2-4mm per second
Note the point you hear the systolic number.
Note the point where the sound disappears.
Continue to deflate, then remove cuff from patient’s arm.
Record findings.
Clean and replace equipment.

Ensure bed is locked
Raise to safety level to protect your back
Support limb distal and proximal to joint being exercised
Neck: flexion and extension, then lateral flexion (ear to shoulder)
Shoulder: flexion and extension, abduction and adduction, internal and external rotation, circumduction
Elbow: flexion and extension, supination and pronation
Wrist: flexion, extension, hyperextension, abduction and adduction (radial and ulnar flexion)
Fingers: Flexion and Extension (make fist), abduction and adduction, flexion and extension of thumb across hand, opposition

Supplies needed for Occupied Bed
bath blanket, fitted sheet, pull pad, pillowcase, flat/top sheet, spread
Occupied Bed Demo
WIPES
Gather supplies and hold away from body
Side rails should be up!!! Raise the bed to protect your back.
Lower patient’s back to resting position.
Provide bath blanket
Put gloves on
Remove top blankets from under bath blanket, dispose correctly with foot pedal
Rails still up, have patient turn on side. Check that they are safe distance from rails.
Can put rail down now. Start with dirty bedsheet and roll that and dirty pull pad underneath them.
Then take new bed sheet and hook onto bed, but leave rest on their body. Take clean pull pad and roll those together, tuck it under. Now you’ll have a dirty roll and a clean roll. Put rail up! Important if you’re going to be throwing pillow case away.
Now’s a good time to change the pillow case, just make sure to hold it away from you.
With rails up, ask patient to turn.
Go to other side of the bed and take the dirty roll with bed sheet and pull pad, dispose with rail still up.
Clean roll out, bed sheet down with no creases
Have patient roll back, rails up!
Put sheet and top blanket on, tag at bottom and no seam towards them.
Pull out the bath blanket!!!
Make sure everything’s even, then make the mitered corners.
Set their bed height down again, make sure rails are down
Take off gloves, call bell, WIPES
