transferred epithet

when an adjective grammatically agrees with one noun, but is meant to be applied to another by context ex: walls of high rome BUT should be read as the high walls of rome

Chiasmus

A statement consisting of two parallel parts in which the second part is structurally reversed ABBA pattern

Onomatopoeia

A word that imitates the sound it represents.

A figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary person or a personified abstraction, such as liberty or love. ex: "o gods.."

hyperbaton

separation of words which belong together, often to emphasize the first of the separated words or to create a certain image.

Anaphora

the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses ex:"I have a dream"

hyperbole

exaggeration ex: ad strata->to the stars

stopping abruptly and leaving a statement unfinished usually never referred to again. emphasis of emotion
