Independent clause
Also known as the main clause, a part of a sentence that can form a complete sentence standing alone.
Subordinate clause
A clause, typically introduced by a conjunction, that forms part of and is dependent on a main clause.
Loose sentence
A sentence in which the main clause comes first, before any dependent clauses.
Periodic sentence
A sentence in which the main clause comes at the end, after any dependent clauses.
Declarative sentence
A sentence that makes a statement and ends with a period.
Imperative sentence
A sentence in the form of a command.
Interrogative sentence
A sentence that asks a question and ends with a question mark.
