Inner layer of skin, thicker, consists of connective tissue w/collagen and elastic fibers, smooth muscle tissue, nervous tissue, and blood.

Outer layer, composed of stratified squamous epithelium
Stratum corneum
Tough layer, tightly w/dead cells, in outermost layer of epidermis

Stratum lucidum
Thickened and hairless layer of skin, -palms and soles


Stratum granulosum


Stratum basale
Deepest distinguished layer -production of epidermal cells


Stratum spinosum


Dermal papillae
Extend into spaces between the ridges - found in skin all over body mostly hands and feet


Basement membrane
Anchors the epidermis to the dermis and separates the two skin layers


Papillary layer


Sebaceous gland
Contain groups of specialized epithelial cells - associated w/hair follicles


Dermal papilla
