Biological Quiz Review for MHS IB Psychology SL
Amygdala
processes fear, anger, aggression
Cerebellum
coordinates involuntary movement + balance and creates procedural/implicit memories
Hypothalamus
manages homeostasis: huger, thirst, body temperature; “reward center”
Medulla
controls heartbeat + breathing and helps regulate blood pressure
Motor cortex
controls voluntary movements → coordination, etc; sections that control body parts with the most precise movements (fingers, mouth, etc) are the largest
Pons
works with cerebellum to coordinate balance, posture, movements, etc; assists with regulating respiration and processing auditory information
Reticular formation
regulates level of consciousness/alertness/arousal (non-sexual, freak)
Sensory cortex
responds to sensory information; most sensitive parks = lips, fingertips, etc
Thalamus
directs sensory messages to sensory cortex and transmits replies to cerebellum → all senses except smell; “sensory switchboard”
Visual cortex
located in the occipital lobes → processes conscious experiences of visual information
