Also known as slime molds; characterized by a naked mass of protoplasm called plasmodium.

Also known as true fungi; primarily filamentous and usually characterized by a mycelium.
Mycelium
The network of filaments (hyphae) that forms the main growing body of a fungus.
Phycomycetes
A class of fungi known as algal fungi, characterized by aseptate hyphae.
Ascomycetes
A class of fungi known as sac fungi, which includes yeasts and causes many plant diseases.
Basidiomycetes
A class of fungi known as club fungi, which produce spores on basidia.
Deuteromycetes
A class of fungi also known as fungi imperfecti, lacking a known sexual reproductive stage.
Oomycetes
A subclass of Phycomycetes characterized by the production of oospores and zoospores.
Zygomycetes
A class of fungi that produce thick-walled sexual spores and are known for causing fruit and vegetable rots.
Apothecium
A type of fruiting body that is cup-like in shape, producing spores in groups.
Perithecium
A fruiting body that is ball-shaped with an ostiole for spore release.
Cleistothecium
A round fruiting body that encloses its spores and relies on animals for dispersal.
Pseudothecium
Similar to perithecium but expands and shoots enclosed spores when it absorbs water.
