Hierarchy of Courts
The structured rank of courts within the legal system, comprising superior and lower courts.
Supreme Court
The highest court in Ghana, which has ultimate authority over all legal matters.
Court of Appeal
A court that hears appeals from lower courts and is part of the superior courts.
High Court
A superior court that has jurisdiction over serious criminal and civil cases.
Regional Tribunal
A court that operates with original jurisdiction in certain criminal matters, established regionally.
Circuit Court
A lower court with original jurisdiction concerning civil and criminal matters.
District Court
A court with original jurisdiction over minor civil and criminal cases.
Juvenile Court
A specialized court for cases involving minors, including both civil and criminal matters.
Family Tribunal
A court that hears matters related to family law, including custody and guardianship.
Jurisdiction
The authority of a court to hear and decide cases within certain parameters.
Contempt of Court
An act obstructing justice or disrespecting the court that can result in penalties.
Original Jurisdiction
The authority of a court to hear a case for the first time.
Appellate Jurisdiction
The authority of a court to review and overturn lower court decisions.
Judicial Committee
A group within the National House of Chiefs that adjudicates on matters related to chieftaincy.
Traditional Council
A body governing chieftaincy matters, headed by the paramount chief.
Chieftaincy Act
A law establishing the framework for chieftaincy and regional governance in Ghana.
