3. squamous epithelial cells
4. germinative epithelial cells
5. bacteria

New cards
Describe red blood cells in semen samples
Red blood cells are rarely seen in semen. The sample may macroscopically show a red-tint
3
New cards
Describe leukocytes in semen samples
Leukocytes are present in cases of seminal vesiculitis, prostatitis, epididymitis or orchitis
4
New cards
Describe germinative epithelial cells in semen sample
Germinative epithelial cells includes multinucleated spermatids (seminiferous tubules), and ciliated “Medusa” cells (efferent tubules). They are observed during severe testicular dysfunction

Describe bacteria in semen samples
Bacteria should not be observed in fresh semen smears, but stored samples frequently show contamination.

Source of bacteria include contamination from artificial vagina, prepuce and penis.

True pathogens (Brucella abortus, Vibrio foetus, Trichomonas foetus) are usually overgrown in culture by saprophytic bacteria. Pathogenic streptococci can be present in stallion semen (venereal infection in mare)
