What is the First Amendment?
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition.
Freedom of Speech
The right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint.
Freedom of Religion
The right to practice any religion or to practice no religion at all.
Freedom of the Press
The right of the media to publish news and opinions without government interference.
Right to Assembly
The right to gather peacefully for demonstrations or protests.
Right to Petition
The right to make complaints to or seek assistance from one’s government without fear of punishment.
Establishment Clause
Part of the First Amendment that prohibits the government from establishing an official religion.
Free Exercise Clause
Section of the First Amendment that protects citizens' rights to practice their religion as they please.
Symbolic Speech
Actions that purposefully and discernibly convey a particular message or statement, protected under the First Amendment.
Limitations of First Amendment Rights
Certain limitations apply, such as prohibitions against hate speech, incitement to violence, and defamation.
