Male Reproductive System Diagram

What are the testes and where are they located?
The testes are two oval-shaped structures located in the scrotum outside of the body cavity to lower body temperature

What do the testes produce?
The testes produce testosterone and sperm (spermatogenesis takes 65-75 days)
What is the epididymis?
The epididymis is the site of sperm maturation, where sperm gains the mobility and ability to fertilize the egg
This process can take up to 4 weeks

Where does sperm go upon ejaculation in the Epididymis?
The sperm goes to the vas deferens
What is the vas deferens’ function?
Vas deferens’ function is to store and transport sperm to the ejaculatory duct

What are the seminal vesicles?
The seminal vesicles secrete an alkaline, viscous fluid which is needed to neutralize the vagina’s acidic environment

What is the ejaculatory duct?
The ejaculatory duct is where the contents of the vas deferens and seminal vescles merge
The semen (sperm + fluid) is then ejected into the prostatic urethra

What is the urethra?
The urethra is the last duct which carries semen out of the penis

What are the three regions of the urethra?

What do the seminal vesicles supply sperm with?
The seminal vesicles supply sperm with fructose, which gives sperm ATP to swim
What is the prostate gland?
The prostate gland produces a milky, acidic substance that contains citric acid, enzymes and prostaglandins that help sperm with mobility and viability

What is the Bulbourethral gland?
The bulbourethral gland secretes an alkaline mucous for lubrication
