What is Bioenergetics?

The study of how nutrients provide energy for organisms.

What is cellular metabolism?

All the reactions of a cell that permit life to persist.

What are anabolic reactions?

Reactions that produce biological molecules.

What are catabolic reactions?

Reactions that break down biomolecules.

What are metabolic pathways?

A series of enzyme-catalyzed reactions that convert starting material into products.

What is flux?

The time it takes for a compound to go from the beginning to end of a pathway.

What is the acetyl group?

A two-carbon breakdown product from nutrients.

What is Acetyl-CoA?

The common intermediate in cells that carbohydrates and lipids are broken down to.

What is the function of transporters?

Transports molecules across the mitochondrial membrane.

What is coupling?

The process of using the energy released from ATP bonds breaking to power a process that would not otherwise occur.

What is the role of FADH2?

Can be shuttled to the ETC to generate ATP molecules.
