helps people w/ depression, identfy and challenge their xve thoughts and benefit by encouraging them to reinterpret these thoughts in a more +ve and realistic way; reducing -ve cognitions
A= activating event
B= belief of event
C= consequences
D= dispute (most important)
E= effect or exchange (replacing irrational beliefs to rational)
disputing involves:
identifying post events their triggered -ve beliefs and behaviours
using rational arguments oto challenge these beliefs
common methods:

logical dispute: questioning whether the belief is logically true.
by disputing REBT reduces symptoms and promotes healthier thinking patterns
becks’s CBT

patients are encouraged to test the reality of their own beliefs by putting a ‘though on trial’ and looking for evidence to sup/contra it.
given hw, recording events to s/c it
and also engage in behavioural activites (party) which encourages depressed patients to enage in the +ve activities to collect more evidence to challenge irrational beliefs.
s: research supporting effectiveness
e: march et al (2007) inv 237 diagnosed w dep and compared outcomes of CBT and antidepressants or combo. after 36w of tm 8q% of receiving CBT and anti, but with both was 86%
e: supports validity of CBT and highlights its value esp to thise not wanting to rely on medication
l: march found however that 86% improvement in the combo group, suggesting CBT is most effective with integrated approach than stand alone.
limitation: noot effective with severe deppressiom
e: CBT requires motivation and active engagement, but S.D patients lack of energy to attend sessions or complete tasks
e: in these cases, antidep may be more appropiate suggest CBT with anti is most effective.
l: tf, CBT may be limited to a stand alone tm for s.d
limitation: CBT focuses opheavily on -ve thoughts, ignoring soc/env factors
e: some individuals may experience depression due to realistic life circumstances such as poverty/abuse
e: in there stuation, changing irrational beliefs may not solve the real problem, as the cause is external factors rather than faulty thinking
L: TF, CBT may not be appropiare for all individuas + cannot be considered a one-size-fits - all treatmen.
