Pressure
The force or thrust acting on unit area (P = F/A).
Pascal (Pa)
The S.I. unit of pressure; 1 Pa = 1 N/m².
Hydraulic machines
Machines that use the principle of pressure transmission in liquids to perform work.
Archimedes’ Principle
States that when a body is submerged in a fluid, the upthrust equals the weight of the fluid displaced.
Buoyant force
The upward force exerted by a fluid, making it seem to weigh less than normal.
Hydrometer
An instrument for measuring the relative density of a liquid.
Atmospheric pressure
The pressure exerted by the weight of the air in the atmosphere; approximately 100,000 N/m² at sea level.
Cyclone
A region of low pressure often associated with widespread rain and severe weather.
Aneroid barometer
A barometer that uses a sealed metal box to measure atmospheric pressure without liquid.
Hydraulic jack
A device that uses liquid under pressure to lift heavy loads.
Pressure gauges
Instruments that measure the pressure exerted by a fluid, whether liquid or gas.
The Bends
A condition caused by the formation of nitrogen bubbles in blood due to rapid ascent from high pressure while scuba diving.
Reservoir
A storage area for water, often constructed on high ground to maintain gravitational pressure flow.
Pressure in liquids
Increases with depth and is transmitted equally in all directions.
Plimsoll mark
Load line on a ship indicating the maximum legal loading level under different water conditions.
Cartesian diver
A device demonstrating buoyancy, where pressure affects the diver's ability to float or sink.
Hydraulic Fork-lift Truck
A type of vehicle that uses hydraulic pressure to lift heavy loads.
Manometer
An instrument used to measure the pressure of a gas by comparing it to atmospheric pressure.
Eye of the storm
The center of a cyclone, characterized by low pressure and calm weather.
