Sanctity of Life
Catholics believe all life is sacred from conception to natural death because humans are made in God’s image. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27) This underlines why abortion is generally rejected.
Abortion as Wrong
Abortion is considered morally wrong because it ends an innocent life. “You shall not murder.” (Exodus 20:13) Catholic teaching sees each unborn child as a unique person with God-given dignity.
Exceptions and Compassion
The Church teaches compassion for women in difficult situations but encourages alternatives to abortion. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) Support is offered rather than judgment.
Life Begins at Conception
Human life is believed to begin at conception, making the unborn child deserving of protection. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5) This strengthens the Catholic opposition to abortion.
Sanctity in Wider Society
Catholics are called to protect life in all forms, promoting care for the vulnerable and sick. “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.” (Psalm 82:3) This extends the principle of sanctity beyond the unborn to society as a whole.
