Collision Theory
reactions happen when particles collide with enough energy and the right orientation.
Activation Energy
the minimum amount of energy needed for a reaction to start
Activated Complex
a temporary, unstable arrangement of atoms formed during a collision before products form.
Catalyst
a substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up
Exothermic Reaction
a reaction that releases energy, usually as heat
Endothermic Reaction
a reaction that absorbs energy, usually as heat
Factors Affecting Reaction Rates
Temperature 2. Stirring 3. Presence of a catalyst 4. Pressure (gases only).
Heat of Reaction (ΔH)
The difference in energy between the products and reactants; can be positive (endothermic) or negative (exothermic).
