CN VIII
Vestibulocochlear: hearing
Sensorineural hearing loss
damage to the chicken and/or the vistibulocochlear nerve… specific to the inner workings…
when performing ear tests this ear is quieter than the other when tuning fork on top of head and both levels take less time rather than only the 2x not reaching 2x for one side.
Conductive hearing loss
damage/blockage of the external or middle ear
When performing ear tests if it is louder in the affected ear it is likely a conductive hearing loss. If when the tuning fork is by the ear rather than right behind/contact and takes less than 2x compared to the other side it likely is a conductive hearing loss.
Strength Level 0/5
Strength Level: No contraction
Strength Level 1/5
Strength Level: muscle flicker but no movement
Strength Level 2/5
Strength Level: movement possible, but not against gravity (test the joint in its horizontal plane)
Strength Level 3/5
Strength Level: Movement possible against gravity, but not against resistance by the examiner
Strength Level 4/5
Strength Level: movement possible against some resistance by the examiner (this category can be further subdivided into + / - / )
Strength Level 5/5
Strength Level: normal strength
Reflex grading: 0
Reflex grading: no response
Reflex grading: 1+
Reflex grading: sluggish or diminished
Reflex grading: 2+
Reflex grading: Active or expected response (textbook normal)
Reflex grading: 3+
Reflex grading: more brisk than expected
Reflex grading: 4+
Reflex grading: Brisk and hyperactive with clonus
Clonus
Name of condition when the patient’s muscles keep responding to the stimulus even after the stimulus is removed.
Motor Strength Test: C5
Motor Strength Test: Shoulder Abduction
Motor Strength Test: Method for C5
Motor Strength Test: patient’s shoulders at 90 degrees and press down while patient presses up
Motor Strength Test: C6
Motor Strength Test: Wrist extensors
Motor Strength Test: C6 method
Motor Strength Test: patient’s fist in boxing position, bracing hand around wrist and hand on wrist side and patient pushes against resistance/away from their body.
Motor Strength Test: C7
Motor Strength Test: Wrist flexors
Motor Strength Test: C7 Method
Motor Strength Test: patient’s fists in boxing position, apply resistance to inside and have patient bend wrists against resistance into/towards body
Motor Strength Test: C8
Motor Strength Test: Finger Flexors
Motor Strength Test: T1 Method
Motor Strength Test: Fingers spread out and interlace fingers with patient and have patient squeeze fingers together.
Motor Strength Test: T1
Motor Strength Test: Finger adductors
Motor Strength Test: C8 Method
Motor Strength Test: Patient in boxing position with fingers extended. Place one hand over palm and other providing resistance against fingers, have patient push fingers into hand (into body)
Motor Strength Test: L1 to L3
Motor Strength Test: Hip Flexors
Motor Strength Test: L1 to L3 Method
Motor Strength Test: Put a stuff arm over the patient’s knee and have the patient lift the knee towards the ceiling, doing one at a time.
Motor Strength Test: L4
Motor Strength Test: Ankle dorsiflexion
Motor Strength Test: L4 method
Motor Strength Test: bracing hand around ankle, testing hand top of foot (shoelaces), patient dorsiflexes against resistance.
Motor Strength Test: L5
Motor Strength Test: Toe extensors
Motor Strength Test: L5 Method
Motor Strength Test: bracing hand over top of foot (shoelaces), testing hand over toes, patient lifts toes against resistance.
Motor Strength Test: S1
Motor Strength Test: ankle planter flexion
Motor Strength Test: S1 Method
Motor Strength Test: bracing hand at ankle, testing hand under foot, patient plantar flexes against resistance.
