What is the big thing you need to know about the respiratory system?

it’s structure and function

3
New cards

What is the respiratory system responsible for?

Taking in oxygen from our environment and releasing carbon dioxide which is a byproduct of our metabolism

4
New cards

What is the nose considered in the respiratory system?

It is the external opening to our respiratory system, that’s what lets in the oxygen and out the carbon dioxide

5
New cards

What do the nostrils in the nose that are a part of the respiratory system lead to?

it leads to the nasal cavity which is divided into two sections by the septum

6
New cards

What are the mouth and throat in the respiratory system considered as?

These are BIG parts of your respiratory system, the throat is the tube that starts behind the nose and goes down into the esophagus

7
New cards

What is considered the voice box in the respiratory system?

The larynx is located at the top of the trachea.

8
New cards

What is considered the windpipe in the respiratory system and where does it lead to?

the trachea goes from the larynx into the bronchi

9
New cards

What are the two main tubes that lead from the trachea into the lungs?

the bronchi

10
New cards

What are the smaller tubes that branch off from the bronchi and lead to the alveoli?

bronchioles

11
New cards

What are alveoli?

Little sacs that are located at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange takes place.

12
New cards

How many parts is the right lung divided into

3

13
New cards

How many parts is the left lung divided into?

2

14
New cards

Why does the left lung only have two sections?

it’s because that’s where the heart sits, to make room for the heart, the body leaves the third part, to have space inside the chest cavity for the heart

<p>What is the function of the respiratory system?</p>

What is the function of the respiratory system?

oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange

16
New cards

What happens when you breathe in and inhale?

your diaphragm contracts and moves downwards this increasing the volume and increases the pressure inside the thoracic cavity. Oxygen is then pulled from the atmosphere as well as other elements

17
New cards

Where does oxygen pass from

into the alveoli and into the blood as a result air flows into the lungs

18
New cards

What happens when we breathe out, exhale?

diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards, decreases volume and increases the pressure inside the thoracic cavity

19
New cards

Carbon dioxide is released from the alveoli and into the lungs. What is this known as?

Ventilation

20
New cards
<p>What is the respiratory system also responsible for?</p>

What is the respiratory system also responsible for?

maintaining pH of the blood. When the blood becomes too acidic the respiratory system takes into overdrive and removes the excess acid through our respiratory system, this is done by blowing off carbon dioxide which is considered an acidic gas

21
New cards

What are some factors that can ultimately affect our respiratory system?

diseases like pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma, mucus buildup

22
New cards

What are three other factors can damage the respiratory system?

Smoking cigarettes, pollution, dust, allergies, and inflammation
