Federalism
A system of government in which the people are regulated by both federal and state governments.
Supremacy Clause
The clause in Article VI, paragraph 2 of the U.S. Constitution making the Constitution and U.S. laws supreme over all other laws.
Bill of Rights
The first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution that set forth minimum standards for rights protected.
Separation of Powers
A constitutional doctrine that each of the three branches of government has separate and distinct powers.
Checks and Balances
A constitutional doctrine that each of the three branches of government operates as a check on the powers of the other branches.
Common Law
Law that is derived from judicial decisions, characterized by precedent and the principle of stare decisis.
Stare Decisis
A legal principle that requires courts to follow precedents set by previous decisions.
Statutory Law
Laws enacted by a legislative body, such as statutes and ordinances.
Administrative Law
The body of law that regulates the operation and procedures of government agencies.
Executive Actions
Actions taken by the President, including executive orders and appointments.
