Creation of Time zones

As locomotive tech expanded, 4 standard American time zones were created to make rail travel more uniform

Cowboys

Demand for beef grew, so ranchers raised a lot of cows. cowboys would herd the cows as they grazed on grass in the west.

Homestead Act

gave settlers land for free as long as they did something with it

National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry

Created cause Pop Groth meant more demand for food meaning more farmers meaning more food meaning too much food meaning lower prices. it was an organization that provided social services and cooperatives for farmers. lobbied for regulation of reailroad fees and prices

Interstate Commerce Act

Passed under Grover Cleveland; regulated the railroad industry

Gold Standard

The amount of paper money available was determined by the amount of gold in the treasury, caused lower prices cause the dollar was worth more

Free silver movement

advocated for adding silver to the gold standard allowing the production of more paper money causing inflation as the value of the dollar fell

Populist Party

political activism of farmers along with free silver movements led to the formation on this new political faction that focused on “average” people. had a platform of federal regulation, Free silver, and workers’ rights

Election of 1892

Populist party ran James B. Weaver, but Grover Clevland ran again and won.

Panic of 1893

took place during Clevland’s second presidency, strengthened Populist cause

Election of 1896

William McKinley (anti-silver) ran on republican ticket

William Jennings Bryan (free silver) ran on democratic ticket (endorsed by Populist party)

McKinley won and populist party fell apart

End of the Frontier

free land running out, so US gov opened up area in Oklahoma (previously designated Indian Territory) which was the las place considered unsettled. Thousands of settlers (known as the Sooners) came at noon. Federick Jackson Turner said frontier was finished.

Indian Attacks against US forts

US built fors on Sioux to protect travelers, sioux warriors like red cloud and crazy horse led attaks against these forts. US gov agreed to abondan forts and create a reservation for the Sioux

Treaty of Medicine Lodge

created reservations for the Comanche, Apache, Cheyenne, and several other peoples. Most of the Plains Indians didn’t like it, but they had little choice as the US gov wanted their land

The Long Walk

US army burned Navajo villages to force the people to make a painful 300 mile trek to their appointed reservation.

Sand Creek Massacre

Colorodo militia opened fire on a Cheyenne camp

Custer’s Last Stand

Also known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn. soldier led by General Custer found gold on the Sioux rservation in the Dakotas, tempting the US to ambondon the terms of the Second treaty of Fort Laramie and buy the land. Chief sitting bull refused to sell, and encouraged his people to fight along with crazy horse. Biggest Indian resistance, Custer was killed. Major Sioux victory, although it was their last.
