What is recruitment and selection?
The process of:
identifying the need for a job
defining the requirements of the position and the job holder
advertising the position
and, choosing the most appropriate person for the job.
Why do job vacancies happen?
Business expansion
Retirement of existing workers
Promotion of existing workers
Business need new skills
Business relocation- and not all of the existing workforce are able to move.
What are the stages of the recruitment process?
Identifying what jobs need filling and the role / specifications of the job is.
Finding possible candidates- through advertising.
Selection- through interviews.
Induction- introducing selected candidate to business.
What is a job description?
A document produced by a business looking to fill a vacancy detailing the roles and responsibilities of the advertised job.
It includes:
Job title
Duties / responsibilities
Who manages the worker / who the worker manages
Employment conditions (holidays, salary etc.)
What is a person specification?
A document drawn up by a business looking to fill a vacancy which sets out the qualifications, skills, experience and personal attributes a successful candidate should possess.
What are the objectives of recruitment advertising?
Inform potential candidates about the job opportunity.
Provide enough information to both inform and interest potential candidates.
Help “screen” or dissuade unsuitable applicants.
How may a business advertise a job internally?

What is internal recruitment?
Involves finding someone already employed by an organisation to fill a vacancy.
What are the advantages of internal recruitment?
Cost of recruitment is reduced- no need for external advertisements and all the administrative costs and time involved in dealing with applications.
Candidate is already well known by the business- less risk than recruiting external candidates.
Increase motivation of the workforce- chance of promotion.
What are the disadvantages of internal recruitment?
Limited pool of candidates- potential of finding new talent is reduced.
As one person is promoted then another vacancy is created, which then must be filled.
What is external recruitment?
Involves hiring someone that is not currently employed by the business hiring them.
What are the advantages of external recruitment?
External candidates may bring in new ideas.
Larger pool of candidates from which to find the best candidate from.
No need to recruit to fill vacancy as you would with internal recruitment.
What are the disadvantages of external recruitment?
Longer process.
More expensive- external advertisement needed and interviews required.
Selection process may not be effective enough to reveal best candidate.
