Perinatologist
An obstetrician specializing in the care of at-risk pregnancies.
Diabetes Mellitus
A metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels due to defects in insulin production or function.
Pregestational diabetes
Diabetes that exists before pregnancy, classified as type 1 or type 2.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
Diabetes that develops during pregnancy, similar to type 2 diabetes.
Macrosomia
A term used to describe a newborn who weighs more than 4,000 grams (8.8 pounds) at birth.
Cardiovascular Disease
A leading cause of maternal mortality, includes conditions such as coronary heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.
Anemia
A condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood.
Preeclampsia
A pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system.
HELLP syndrome
A severe form of preeclampsia that stands for Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, and Low Platelets.
Postpartum Hemorrhage
Excessive bleeding after childbirth, often due to uterine atony or retained placental fragments.
Rh incompatibility
A condition that occurs during pregnancy when an Rh-negative mother has an Rh-positive baby, leading to hemolytic disease.
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)
A condition in which a newborn experiences withdrawal symptoms due to exposure to addictive substances while in the womb.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
The sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant, usually during sleep.
Meconium aspiration syndrome
A respiratory condition occurring when a newborn inhales meconium mixed with amniotic fluid.
Congenital Disorders
Defects or anomalies present at birth that may affect various bodily systems.
Inborn Errors of Metabolism
A group of rare genetic disorders in which a person's metabolism is affected by the absence or malfunction of an enzyme.
Turner Syndrome
A chromosomal disorder in females characterized by the absence of one X chromosome.
Klinefelter Syndrome
A genetic condition in which a male is born with an extra copy of the X chromosome.
Hydrocephalus
A condition characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain, leading to increased pressure.
