eligibility criteria for MAID

  • >/= 18 and have decision making capacity (mental competence)

  • eligible for public health care

  • request it themselves without external influence

  • provide informed consent (at the time of request and immediately before receiving)

  • have a disease that is serious and incurable or a disability (does not have to be a terminal illness)

  • have irreversibly declining capabilities

  • suffer from long-lasting, intolerable physical or psychological concerns that cant be improved in a way the patient finds acceptable

how must the request for MAID be performed

  • made in writing and signed and dated by the patient and an independent witness

  • the request can be withdrawn at any time

  • if an individuals sole health condition is mental illness, they are not eligible to receive MAID until 2027

  • two independent HCP (physician or NP) : they do not know each other or the patient, and there is no potential for personal benefit (at least one must have specialty knowledge in that illness)

  • mizadolam: anxiolytic

  • lidocaine: anesthetic

  • propofol-anesthetic and coma inducing

  • rocuronium (neuromuscular blockers to stop respiration)
