Spatial concepts

Scales of analysis

Different levels of geographical analysis: global, regional, national, and local.

Map scale

The ratio of distance represented on a map to the actual distance on Earth.

Absolute location

Exact coordinates defined by longitude and latitude that do not change.

Meridians

Lines of longitude that run north/south and are parallel to the prime meridian.

Parallels

Lines of latitude that run east/west and are parallel to the equator.

Relative location

The position of a place in relation to natural or manmade features, which can change.

Distance decay

The principle that as distance increases, the likelihood of interaction decreases.
