Covalent Bond
A bond that results from the sharing of electrons between atoms.
Molecule
The unit of matter held together by covalent bonds.
Valence Electrons
Electrons in the outer shell of an atom that are involved in forming bonds.
Ionic Compound
Composed of ions arranged in a pattern called a crystal lattice.
Electronegativity
A measure of the pull an atom has on bonding electrons.
Polar Covalent Bond
A bond where electrons are shared unequally, resulting in partial charges.
Dipole Moment
A quantitative measure of the polarity of a bond.
Bond Energy
The amount of energy it takes to break one mole of a bond in a compound.
Lewis Electron Dot Structure
A representation to depict the distribution of valence electrons.
Octet Rule
Atoms tend to bond in a way that gives them eight valence electrons.
Binary Molecular Compound
A compound formed from two different nonmetals.
Subscript Prefixes
Prefixes used in naming molecular compounds indicating the number of atoms.
Single Bond
A bond formed by sharing two electrons or one pair of electrons.
Double Bond
A bond formed by sharing four electrons or two pairs of electrons.
Triple Bond
A bond formed by sharing six electrons or three pairs of electrons.
Chemical Reaction
Involves breaking bonds in reactant molecules and forming new bonds in products.
