IT Infrastructure
Investment in hardware, software, and services shared across the firm, providing the foundation for serving customers and managing internal processes.
IT Infrastructure Components
Physical devices and software applications required to operate the enterprise, along with firmwide services and capabilities.
IT Services
Computing platforms, telecommunications, data management, application software, physical facilities, IT standards, and IT education.
Five Eras of IT Infrastructure Evolution
General-purpose mainframe and minicomputer computing, personal computers, client/server networks, enterprise computing, and cloud/mobile computing.
Moore's Law
The number of components on a chip doubles approximately every two years.
Computer Hardware Platform
Client machines (PCs, laptops), and server machines that use Intel or AMD microprocessors.
Operating System Platform
Manages the computer's memory, processes, software, and hardware, enabling user communication.
Enterprise Software
Software that manages various business aspects like accounting, sales, marketing, and HR.
Enterprise Database Management Software
Organizes and manages the firm's data for efficient access and use, often using Storage Area Networks (SANs).
Internet Platforms
Hardware, software, and management services supporting a firm's website, including Web hosting.
Software Integration
Ensuring new infrastructure works with legacy systems and that new elements work together.
Legacy Systems
Older transaction processing systems on mainframes, kept to avoid replacement costs but integrated into contemporary infrastructure.
Grid Computing
A network of computers working together to perform complex tasks as a virtual supercomputer.
Virtualization
Presents computing resources so they can be accessed without physical or geographic restrictions.
Cloud Computing Characteristics
On-demand self-service, ubiquitous network access, location-independent resource pooling, rapid elasticity, measured service.
Green Computing/Green IT
Practices and technologies to minimize the environmental impact of computers and related devices.
Open Source Software
Software that is free, modifiable by users, and can be redistributed without additional licensing.
AJAX
Allows a client and server to exchange small pieces of data behind the scenes without reloading the entire Web page.
Web Services
Loosely coupled software components exchanging information using Web standards, regardless of operating systems or programming languages.
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)
A set of self-contained services that communicate with each other to create a working software application.
