Define ingestion.

taking of substances into body via the mouth

Define mechanical digestion.

breakdown of food into smaller pieces w/o chemical change to food molecules

Define chemical digestion.

breakdown of large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble molecules

Define absorption.

movement of small food molecules & ions through wall of intestine into blood

Define assimilation.

movement of digested food molecules into cells where they are used & becomes part of cells

Define egestion.

passing out of food not digested/absorbed as faeces, through the anus
