Critical thinking
The dynamic process of questioning preconceptions and biases through the gathering and evaluation of data to reach new conclusions that consider realistic implications and consequences.
Dynamic process
A process that adapts and can be revised in response to the situation; it is flexible, revisable, and responsive rather than static.
Preconceptions
Beliefs or assumptions brought to a situation that may bias interpretation and need to be questioned.
Bias
A preconceived tendency or inclination that can affect judgment or objectivity.
Gathering and evaluation of data
The collection of information from sources and its analysis to support conclusions.
New conclusions
Updated or revised understandings reached after reevaluating data and evidence.
Realistic implications and consequences
Predicted effects of conclusions that consider real-world outcomes and future impact.
Going beyond the literal
Interpreting a text to uncover deeper ideas and meanings beyond surface wording.
Questioning
Using inquiries to investigate assumptions, evidence, and interpretations.
Deliberate
Done consciously and intentionally, not something that happens automatically.
Skill
A cognitive ability that can be developed through practice and instruction, not solely innate.
Evidence
Facts, data, or quotes used to support a claim or conclusion.
Citations, quotes, explanations
Tools used to connect evidence to argument and to explain its relevance.
Assertion of meaning (truth)
Positing a clear claim or interpretation supported by evidence gathered from the text.
