observation
facts collected using your 5 senses

inference
making an assumption or prediction about what you observe

hypothesis
an educated guess that will be tested in an experiment

dependent variable
The measured variable. This is the result.

independent variable
The changed variable. The part of the experiment that the scientist changes.

constant / controlled variables
The parts of the experiment that always stays the same.

experimental group
The tested group. Gets the variable/treatment

control group
The un-tested group. Does NOT get the variable/treatment

data
Any pieces of information collected observations or experiments.

Qualitative Observation
an observation that describes physical things. Ex. The flowers are red.

Quantitative Observation
An observation that can be counted or measured. Ex. the tree is 20ft. tall.

Experiment
a set of controlled observations that test the scientist's hypothesis

Conclusion
A summary based on evidence or facts

Variable
A factor that can change

Scientific Method
A series of steps to solve problems. Includes creating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis, collecting data, and stating conclusions.
