Human rights

Basic rights and freedoms that every person is entitled to simply by being human.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)

United Nations document that lists the fundamental rights all people should have.

Segregation

Forced separation of people by race in schools, transport, housing and public places.

Desegregation / Integration

Ending racial separation and allowing people of different races to use the same facilities.

Jim Crow Laws

State laws in the southern USA that enforced racial segregation and discrimination after the Civil War.

Separate but equal

Legal idea that segregation was acceptable if facilities for each race were equal (overturned in 1954).

NAACP

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People – organisation that fought for civil rights, often through the courts.

Prisoner of conscience

Person imprisoned for their peaceful political, religious or other beliefs, not for violence.

Amnesty International

Black Lives Matter

Modern movement that protests against racial injustice and police violence toward Black people.
