Forced separation of people by race in schools, transport, housing and public places.

Ending racial separation and allowing people of different races to use the same facilities.
Jim Crow Laws
State laws in the southern USA that enforced racial segregation and discrimination after the Civil War.
Separate but equal
Legal idea that segregation was acceptable if facilities for each race were equal (overturned in 1954).
NAACP
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People – organisation that fought for civil rights, often through the courts.

Person imprisoned for their peaceful political, religious or other beliefs, not for violence.
