Models
Representations of reality, often simplified, used to help geographers understand, explain, or predict spatial phenomena.
Spatial models
Stylized representations, often resembling maps, that illustrate theories about spatial distributions and arrangements.
Nonspatial models
Models that illustrate theories and concepts using words, graphs, or tables rather than geographical depictions.
Time-distance decay
The concept that the farther away one thing is from another, the less interaction the two things will have.
Spatial patterns
The general arrangement of things being studied on the Earth's surface.
Networks
A set of interconnected nodes that can be mapped to show interaction and connectivity between places.
Quantitative data
Information that can be measured and recorded using numbers, such as population counts or temperature readings.
Geospatial data
Data that has a geographic component, meaning it is tied to a specific location on the Earth's surface.
Qualitative sources
Data collection methods such as interviews, descriptions, and visual observations that provide non-numeric information.
Scales of analysis
The level of detail used to study a phenomenon, typically ranging from local to national, regional, and global levels.
Reference maps
Maps designed for people to refer to for general information about places, such as locations and boundaries.
Political maps
A type of reference map that shows human-created boundaries and designations, such as countries, states, and cities.
Physical maps
A type of reference map that highlights natural features like mountains, rivers, and deserts.
Road maps
Reference maps showing highways, streets, and alleys to aid in navigation and distance estimation.
Plat maps
Reference maps that show property lines and details of land ownership for specific tracts of land.
Thematic maps
Maps that show spatial aspects of information or of a particular phenomenon, such as climate or population density.
Choropleth maps
Thematic maps that use various colors or shades to show the location and distribution of spatial data.
Dot distribution maps
Thematic maps that use dots to represent a specific quantity of a phenomenon and show its distribution.
Graduated symbol maps
Thematic maps that use symbols of different sizes to indicate different amounts of something.
Isoline maps
Maps that use lines to connect points of equal value to show variations in data across space.
Topographic maps
A specific type of isoline map that uses contour lines to show changes in elevation and landforms.
Cartogram
A type of map in which the size of a country or region is distorted to represent the value of a specific variable.
Scale
The ratio between the size of things in the real world and the size of those same things on a map.
Cartographic scale
The way a map communicates the ratio of its size to the size of what it represents, often shown as a fraction or bar.
Small-scale maps
Maps that show a large area with a low level of detail, represented by a small fraction like 1,000,0001.
Large-scale maps
Maps that show a small area with a high level of detail, represented by a large fraction like 1,0001.
Absolute location
The precise spot where something is according to a system, typically using latitude and longitude coordinates.
Latitude
The distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees from 0° to 90°.
Equator
The imaginary line that circles the globe exactly halfway between the North and South Poles at 0∘ latitude.
Longitude
The distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, measured in degrees from 0° to 180°.
Prime Meridian
The imaginary line that runs through Greenwich, England, representing 0∘ longitude.
International Date Line
The line that roughly follows 180∘ longitude and marks where each new calendar day begins.
Relative location
The description of where something is in relation to other things or landmarks.
Connectivity
The degree of direct linkage between one particular location and other locations in a network.
Accessibility
The ease with which a destination may be reached from some other location, considering time and cost.
Direction
A geographic concept used to describe where things are in relation to each other, such as cardinal or relative directions.
Patterns
The geometric or regular arrangement of objects or phenomena in a given space.
Absolute distance
The exact measurement of the physical space between two places, using standard units like miles or kilometers.
Relative distance
The distance between two places measured in terms of time, effort, or cost rather than linear units.
Elevation
The measurement of the height of a land feature or location relative to sea level.
Distribution
The way something is spread out or arranged over a geographic area.
Clustered (agglomerated) distribution
A pattern where objects are positioned close together or in groups across a space.
Linear distribution
A pattern where objects are arranged in a straight line, often along a road or river.
Dispersed distribution
A pattern where objects are spread out relatively evenly across a wide area.
Circular distribution
A pattern where objects are equally spaced from a central point, forming a circle.
Geometric distribution
A pattern where objects are placed in a regular, non-random arrangement like squares or rectangles.
Random distribution
A pattern with no apparent order or logic to the position of objects in space.
