Communis
The Latin word from which "communication" is derived, meaning "to share and inform" ideas, feelings, and other concepts.
Communication (Keyton, 2011)
The process of transmitting information and common understanding from one person to another.
Communication (Johnston, 2008)
An action that takes place when a sender displays, transmits, or directs a set of symbols to a receiver with the aim of changing the receiver's actions or worldview.
Communication (Abulencia, 2001)
A dynamic process which includes the sending and receiving of messages at a conscious or unconscious level.
Communication Context
The circumstance or environment in which communication takes place, including the physical setting, the value positions of a speaker/listener, and the relevance or appropriateness of the message conveyed.
Intrapersonal Communication
Communication that occurs within oneself (derived from Latin intra- meaning within or inside), encompassing inner talk, inner monologue, inner dialogue, self-verbalization, or self-statement.
Interpersonal Communication
An interactive exchange taking place between, among, and together two or more people (derived from Latin inter- meaning between, among, and together).
Extended Communication
Communication that involves the use of electronic media and technological means, including television, radio, audio or phone conferencing, video conferencing, and Skype calls.
Organizational Communication
Communication centered on the role that interactions play within an organizational context among individuals working for a company.
Intercultural Communication
Communication between or among people having different linguistic, religious, ethnic, social, professional, or gender backgrounds.

Communication Process Model
A diagrammatic representation of interaction involving Sender, Encoding, Message, Channel, Decoding, Receiver, Feedback, and Noise.
Source
The sender who carefully crafts the message, such as an author, public speaker, or traffic enforcer.
Message
The reason behind any interaction, representing the meaning shared between the sender and the receiver.
Encoding
The process of transferring the message into symbolic form for transmission.
Channel
The means by which the message is conveyed, such as a phone call or a notification letter.
Decoding
The process performed by the receiver to interpret the encoded message.
Receiver
The person or audience who receives the transmitted message and is expected to listen/read carefully, provide responses, and ask clarifying questions.
Feedback
The written, spoken, or acted-out response expressed to confirm the recipient's understanding of the message.
Environment
The place, feeling, mood, mindset, physical setup, and condition surrounding both sender and receiver during communication.
Interference
Also known as a barrier or block, anything that prevents effective communication from taking place.
Psychological Barriers
A kind of interference caused by thoughts, such as past experiences, that hamper a message from being correctly interpreted.
Physical Barriers
A kind of interference including competing stimuli, weather and climate, health, and ignorance of the medium.
Linguistic and Cultural Barriers
Interference pertaining to language and cultural environments where words hold different meanings across cultures.
Mechanical Barriers
Interference raised by the technological channels or gadgets employed for communication, such as cell phones and laptops.
