Monomial
An algebraic expression made out of constants or variables that are raised to positive integer powers. One term, but can contain more than one variable
What can a monomial NOT be
The variable can not be in the exponent, the variable can not be in the denominator, and the variable can not have a negative exponent
Polynomial
A sum of monomials
Binomial
A polynomial with only two terms
Trinomial
A polynomial with three terms
Degree
A polynomials degree is the greastest degrees of its terms. Basically the highest number of what term is raised to
The degree of a constant term
Is zero
To rearrange polynomials
Put the terms in order of degree
Will dividing polynomials still make a polynomial?
No, since there will be a denominator in the variable
Closure property
Deems that any operation, besides division, done between two polynomials will result in a polynomial. Same goes with integers
How to add polynomials?
Add like terms and put in descending order
FOIL
The method used to multiply ONLY binomials. First terms, outer terms, inner terms, and then last terms
When the binomial is squared,
Just multiply the binomial by itself
When multiplying trinomials
it’s best to use the distributive property or vertically
