1

Aerobic respiration

The usual process for releasing energy into the muscles. Glucose + Oxygen —> Energy + CO2 + Water.

New cards
2

Anaerobic respiration

When your muscles work at high intensity to create energy. Glucose —> Energy + Lactic Acid.

New cards
3

Oxygen debt

Lactic acid builds up following anaerobic respiration due to a lack of oxygen being present.

New cards
4

What does oxygen debt cause?

Muscles to ache and cramp

New cards
5

Energy sources

Carbohydrates and fats are both macronutrients.

New cards
6

Fats

Fuel source for aerobix respiration

New cards
7

Carbohydrates

Fuel source for aerobic and anaerobic respiration

New cards
8

Why do we need a cool down?

As we exercise anaerobically, muscles produce energy without oxygen. There is an increase in the production of CO2, causing lactic acid build up in muscles. Oxygen debt occurs. A cool down will keep breathing rate elevated which allows oxygen debt to be repaid.

9

Carbohydrates properties

Split into complex and simple. Found in bananas, rice and pasta, Broken down into glucose and stored as glycogen. Turns into fats if not used after 24 hours. Should be 70% of your diet.

New cards
10

Fats properties

Found in nuts, butter, cheese and fish. Broken down into fatty acids, stored in muscles. Marathon runners mostly need this. Should be forming 30% of your diet.

New cards
11

What do complex carbs provide?

Provide slow and long lasting energy.

New cards
12

What do simple carbs provide?

Provide quick and short lasting energy.

New cards
13

What energy source do you use if you are doing anything longer than 2hrs?

Fats since all carbohydrates have been used up.
