refers to medical procedures used when a person's heart and lungs have stopped working (breathing or pulse has stopped)
CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) should be performed when
someone has a pulse but isn't breathing
Rescue Breaths should be performed when
1 rescue breath every 5 to 6 seconds, or about 10 to 12 breaths per minute
Rescue breaths for adults
2 to 3 seconds (20-30 breaths per minute)
Rescue breaths for a CHILD/INFANT should be one breath every
Automated External Defibrillator
What does AED stand for?
When the heart has stopped beating normally. Used on non-breathing child aged 8 or older who weighs more than 55 lb or an adult
When is an AED useful?
A dangerously fast heartbeat.
What is ventricular tachycardia?
A fast and irregular heartbeat.
What is ventricular fibrillation?
A condition where the lower heart chambers contract in a very rapid and uncoordinated manner.
What is ventricular fibrillation?
The heart doesn't pump blood to the rest of the body.
What is the consequence of ventricular fibrillation?
An irregular, often rapid heart rate that commonly causes poor blood flow.
What is Atrial Fibrillation?
The heart's upper chambers (atria) beat out of coordination with the lower chambers (ventricles).
How do the heart's chambers behave in Atrial Fibrillation?
No, Atrial Fibrillation may have no symptoms.
Does Atrial Fibrillation always have symptoms?
Palpitations, shortness of breath, and fatigue.
What are common symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation when they appear?
Complete the CHECK and CALL steps.
What are the first two steps when using an AED?
Turn it on and follow the voice prompts.
What should you do as soon as an AED is available?
Place one pad on the upper right side of the chest and the other pad on the lower left side of the chest, a few inches below the left armpit.
How should you attach the AED pads to the chest?
Place one pad in the middle of the chest and the other pad on the back, between the shoulder blades.
What should you do if the AED pads may touch?
Plug the pad connector cable into the AED, if necessary.
What should you do with the pad connector cable?
Make sure no one is touching the person and say, 'CLEAR!' in a loud, commanding voice.
What must you ensure before the AED analyzes the heart's rhythm?
Push the 'shock' button to deliver the shock.
What should you do if the AED determines a shock is needed?
Begin CPR.
What should you do after delivering a shock with the AED?
A combination of two movements to open the airway by tilting the forehead back and lifting the chin; not used for trauma patients.
head tilt-chin lift maneuver
A method of clearing the mouth of foreign material that presents a risk of blocking the airway or being aspirated into the lungs.
Finger Sweep
Rapid, deep, regular compressions on the center of the chest in an attempt to circulate blood to the brain, lungs, and heart.
Chest compressions
