What is mental health?
The current state of the person’s physchological wellbeing and functioning
What is mentally healthy?
The capacity to think, feel and act in ways that enhance your ability to enjoy life
What are mental health problems?
Diminished capacities that interfere with your enjoyment of life (short term)
What is a mental health disorder?
Conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, mood and behaviour (ongoing)
what is the mental health continuum?
Establishes a spectrum of mental health rather than just fixing it. To help understand and identify mental health problems.
What is a stigma?
Unfair judgement and disrespect to a person because of a difference
What is an anxiety disorder?
Excessive fear, worry or nervousness that interferes with life
Symptoms of anxiety disorder
Stress, inability to set aside worry, restlessness
What is Panic disorder?
Sudden and intense episodes of fears (panic attacks)
What are the symptoms of panic disorder?
Shortness of breath, dizziness, racing heart, feeling of impeding doom.
What can Panic disorders lead to?
avoidance, and other anxiety disorders.
What are Phobias?
Irrational and intense fears of specific objects, situations, or experience that may cause panic attacks
What is a way to get over phobias?
Exposure therapy, in a form of cognitive behaviour therapy
What is generalised anxiety disorder?
Chronic and excessive worry about every day things
What is PTSD?
A condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event.
What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder? (BDD)
Obsessive focus on perceived physical flaws which can lead to compulsive behaviours.
What are Symptoms of BDD?
Seeking reassurance, comparing appearance to others, photo editing, extreme dieting, cosmetic procedures
What is Obsessive Compulsion Disorder? (OCD)
Intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours, causing intense anxiety. Compulsions performed to relieve stress
What is Dissociative Personality Disorder? (DID)
A person will develop 2 or more distinct identities each with unique thoughts, behaviours and memories. Could be triggered by trauma or stress.
What is an eating disorder?
Caused by having a distorted body image and leads to extreme eating behaviours and an unhealthy relationship with food.
What is Anoxeria?
An eating disorder characterised with an fear of weight gain and an extreme restriction of food intake.
What is Bulimia?
An eating disorder characterised by cycles of binge eating followed by purging behaviours like self induced vomiting and excessive excercise
What is a mood disorder?
Involves severe persistent disturbances in emotional state that impact daily life
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Alternating mood episodes between depression and mania.
What do Manic episodes involve with Bipolar?
risky behaviour, rapid speech, decreased need for sleep, grandoise thinking
What do depressive episodes involve with Bipolar?
fatigue, low motivation, suicidal thoughts
What is Bipolar I?
Full blown mania and severe depression
What is Bipolar II?
hypomania and more prolonged depressive episodes
What is clinical depression?
Prolonged depressive feelings that impact mood thoughts and daily function.
