What are the primary (central) lymphoid organs?
Thymus & bone marrow, where lymphocytes originate and mature.
What are the secondary (peripheral) lymphoid organs?
Spleen,
lymph nodes,
tonsils,
appendix,
and mucosal lymphoid tissue of intestine/respiratory tract.
What cells develop in bone marrow?
NK cells,
mononuclear phagocytes,
granulocytes,
and B-cell precursors.
Bone marrow does not contain T cells.
What are the key functions of the thymus?
Provides hormones (thymosins, thymopoietins).
Site of T-cell maturation.
Performs positive & negative selection.
Only ~5% of T cells leave the thymus as fully “educated.”
What zones exist in lymph nodes and what cells dominate them?
Cortex → B cells
Paracortex → T cells (T-dependent area)
Medulla → B & T cells
They synthesize antibodies when stimulated by particulate antigens.
