Independent Variable
The variable that the researcher manipulates or deliberately changes in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
The variable that the researcher measures to determine the effect of changes in the independent variable.
Control Group
A group in an experiment that receives no treatment or a standard baseline condition, serving as a point of comparison.
Experimental Group
The group or groups in an experiment that receive the specific treatment or varying levels of the independent variable being tested.
Controlled Variables (Constants)
Factors that must remain identical across all experimental and control groups to ensure that only the independent variable affects the outcome.
Hypothesis
A testable and falsifiable prediction about the outcome of an experiment, typically formatted as: If [independent variable changes], then [dependent variable will change], because [scientific reasoning].
Positive Control
An experimental condition that is expected to produce a known result, verifying that the experimental system and setup are functioning properly.
Negative Control
An experimental condition expected not to produce a response, used to confirm that any observed effect in the experimental group is due solely to the independent variable.
Replication
The practice of conducting an experiment with multiple independent samples or repeated units to ensure results are consistent and not due to random chance.
Confounding Variable
An uncontrolled factor that changes along with the independent variable, potentially providing an alternative explanation for the observed results.
DRY MIX
An acronym for axis placement: Dependent / Responding variable on the Y-axis; Manipulated / Independent variable on the X-axis.
Bar Graph
A visual representation best suited for comparing data across discrete or separate categories.

Line Graph
A visual representation best suited for tracking how a variable changes continuously over a numerical scale, such as time, temperature, or concentration.

Scatter Plot
A graph used to examine the relationship between two quantitative variables, where each plot point represents a paired set of data.

Correlation Types
The direction of relationship between two variables on a graph, classified as Direct (Positive), Indirect (Negative), or No Correlation.

Slope
The rate of change of the dependent variable relative to the independent variable, calculated as Slope=change in xchange in y.
Plateau
A region on a graph where further increases in the independent variable produce little or no additional change in the dependent variable.
Outlier
A specific data point that deviates substantially from the overall pattern of the remaining data.
Mean
The arithmetic average of a data set, calculated by summing all measurements and dividing by the total count of values.
Median
The middle value in a set of data when the numbers are ordered sequentially from smallest to largest.
Mode
The value or measurement that appears most frequently within a given data set.
Range
The statistical measure of dispersion calculated as Range=maximum−minimum.
Standard Deviation (SD)
A statistical value describing how widely individual measurements spread around the mean of a data set.
Standard Error of the Mean (SEM)
A statistic indicating how accurately a sample mean estimates the true population mean, representing sampling variability.
Chi-Square Analysis
A statistical hypothesis test used to evaluate whether differences between observed and expected frequencies are due to random chance or a significant factor.
Null Hypothesis (H0)
A baseline statement asserting that there is no significant difference between observed and expected data, with any variation being due to pure chance.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha)
A statement proposing that an observed effect or difference is real, statistically significant, and caused by a specific variable.
Accuracy
The closeness of a measured value to its true or accepted standard value.
Precision
The degree of agreement or consistency among multiple repeated measurements of the same quantity.
Qualitative Data
Non-numerical, descriptive observational data, such as colors, textures, or behaviors.
Quantitative Data
Numerical measurements or counts expressed with defined numeric values.
Continuous Data
Quantitative data measured along a continuum that can take any value within a range, including fractional or decimal numbers.
Discrete Data
Quantitative data collected by counting distinct items that can only take specific whole-number values.
Population
The entire group of individuals or items that a study seeks to draw conclusions about.
Sample
A representative sub-group selected from a larger population for measurement and analysis.
Reliability
The extent to which an experiment or measurement procedure yields reproducible and consistent results upon repeated testing.
Validity
The extent to which a test or experimental design measures what it claims or intends to measure.
Experimental Study
An investigation where a researcher directly manipulates one or more independent variables to establish cause-and-effect relationships.
Observational Study
An investigation where researchers record existing phenomena without manipulating independent variables, identifying associations rather than causation.
Wafting Technique
A safety procedure used to detect chemical odors by fanning vapors gently toward the nose with a hand rather than inhaling directly from a container.
