The hydrological cycle
The series of processes in which water is constantly recycled through the system
Evaporation
A process by which liquid water changes into water vapor
Transpiration
A process by which plants absorb water from the soil through their roots and release it as water vapor through stomata
Evapotranspiration
The combined process of water vaporization from the Earth’s surface and the release of water vapor by plants from transpiration
Sublimation
The transition of solid to a vapor state without melting
Condensation
The process in which water vapor in the atmosphere transforms into liquid
Advection
The horizontal movement of water vapor caused by prevailing wind patterns
Surface run-off
The movement of water over the Earth’s surface, occurring when the group is impermeable, leading to excess water
Infiltration
The process of water seeping into the soil from the surface
Percolation
The downward movement of water through the soil and underlying rock layers, reaching aquifers
Ocean conveyor belt
Distributes heat around the world and affecting climate
Thermohaline circulation
The mechanism driving deep ocean currents. The density is determined through temperature (thermo) and salinity (haline)
