Bryophytes
An informal term for a group of non-vascular pioneer land plants that lack true roots, true stems, and true leaves.
Non-vascular
A characteristic of plants that lack internal plumbing for transporting water and nutrients.
Surface absorption
The survival strategy where water and nutrients are absorbed directly across the plant's surface, which limits the organism's physical size.
Green algae
The ancestral organisms from which early bryophytes directly evolved.
Spores
Primitive, single-celled reproductive units used by bryophytes instead of seeds.
Bryophyta
The formal taxonomic phylum for Mosses.
Marchantiophyta
The formal taxonomic phylum for Liverworts.
Anthocerotophyta
The formal taxonomic phylum for Hornworts.
Phyllids
Leaf-like structures in mosses that are arranged around a central stem-like axis.
Rhizoids
Root-like threads that anchor bryophytes and aid in the absorption of nutrients.
Desiccation
A superpower of mosses involving drying out completely to enter a deep dormant state for survival in harsh conditions.
Revival
The process where a desiccated plant instantly rehydrates and resumes photosynthesis once moisture returns.
Thalloid
A flattened, sheet-like or lobed appearance characteristic of certain liverworts and hornworts.
Hornworts
Bryophytes identified by elongated sporophytes resembling tiny horns and their symbiosis with cyanobacteria.
Nitrogen fixation
A process enhanced by the symbiosis between hornworts and cyanobacteria that improves soil fertility.
Pioneer Species
The first organisms to colonize harsh, barren environments, breaking down rock and creating the first layers of soil.
Ecological Succession
The process by which pioneer species physically prepare a habitat, allowing vascular plants to eventually take over.
