Crown

The part of the tooth covered by enamel and is visible in the mouth.

Cervix

The neck of the tooth (narrow area where the enamel of the crown joins the cementum of the root)

Root

Part of the tooth that is covered with the cementum ( the bony socket/ holds tooth in place)

Apex

The tip of the root ( area around the root)

Apical Foramen

The opening in the tip of the root

Apicoectomy

surgical removal of the apical portion(tip) of the root

Mesial

towards midline of the mouth

Distal

away from the midline of the mouth

facial

towards the lip or cheeks

Labial

refers to the lips

buccal

towards the cheeks

lingual

tongue side/ towards the tongue

occlusal

the broad chewing surface of the posterior teeth

Incisal edge

cutting edge of an anterior tooth

proximal surfaces

the surface next to the neighboring tooth in the same arch ( each tooth has 2 proximal surfaces)
