Emotional Intelligence
The potential to monitor and accurately identify, express, and understand one’s own and other’s emotions and reactions.
Impact of Individual’s Emotional State
Positively affect memory and learning, boost confidence to make better decisions, improve connections and effective working relationships with others, cause physiological reactions that affect health and well-being, enhance creativity.
Benefits of Emotional Intelligence
Better self-perception of social ability, more successful interpersonal relationships, less interpersonal aggression and problems, being perceived by others as more pleasant, socially skilled, and empathetic to be around, better relationships with family and colleagues, increased social dynamics at work as well as better negotiating ability, higher life satisfaction and self-esteem and lower levels of insecurity or depression.
Criticisms of Emotional Intelligence
Concerns that the model confuses skills with morals, it does not have predictive outcomes, measurement of the model is also a concern because it is based on self-assessment.
Ability Model of Intelligence
Requires people to be evaluated for four related abilities to determine their emotional quotient: Perceiving emotions, Reasoning with emotions, Using and understanding emotions, Managing emotions.
Mixed Model of Intelligence
Built on five competencies: Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy, Social skills. It mixes emotional intelligence qualities with other personal traits.
Trait Model of Intelligence
Establishes that people have emotional traits or emotional self-perceptions as part of their personality.
Self-Awareness
A component of the mixed model of emotional intelligence; involves understanding your own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, values, and impact on others.
Self-Regulation
A component of the mixed model of emotional intelligence; involves controlling impulsive feelings and behaviors, managing your emotions in healthy ways, taking initiative, following through on commitments, and adapting to changing circumstances.
Motivation
A component of the mixed model of emotional intelligence; involves being persistently driven to achieve for its own sake, not just for money or status.
Empathy
A component of the mixed model of emotional intelligence; involves considering other people’s feelings, especially when making decisions.
Social Skills
A component of the mixed model of emotional intelligence; involves proficiency in managing relationships and building networks; an ability to find common ground and build rapport.
