Origin: Maxilla & mandible (outer surfaces of alveolar processes), TMJ

Action: compression of cheeks against the teeth

Platysma
Origin: Subcutaneous fascia of superior chest
Insertion: mandible & subcuntaneous fascia of lower face
Action: moves skin of superior chest & neck, depresses and pulls lower lip laterally (side & down)

Sternocleidomastoid
Origin: manubrium of sternum & medial 1/3 of clavicle
Insertion: mastoid process of temporal bone and lateral ½ spr nuchal line
Action: lateral flexion of head (atlanto-occipital joint); contralateral rtn of lower neck (spinal jnts); extension of upper neck (atlanto-occipital jnt); elevation of sternum and clavicle (forced inhalation)
